The public doesn't want to hear excuses of why a state enterprise cannot investigate alleged fraud in its own offices. Foreign governments and law-enforcement agencies have recently informed the Thai government, the public and world of major corruption cases. Mind-boggling amounts seem to have gone into the pockets of government officials and the middlemen they employed to extract money from foreign firms, and charge the Thai public with paying. A partial list of state firms allegedly involved in highly detailed bribery revealed during the past month is both shocking and disappointing. Of course, the public has the right to draw conclusions by this refusal by current directors of state firms to talk about bribery and backhanders.
